Khedr gets Nelly Sachs prize

Iraqi poet and novelist Abbas Khedr got the Nelly Sachs prize after the judges studied his lifetime work.

The Nelly Sachs prize is a literary prize given every two years by the German city of Dortmund. Named after the Jewish poet Nelly Sachs, the prize includes a cash award of €15,000. It honours authors for outstanding literary contributions to the promotion of understanding between peoples.

Khedr was born in Bagdad in 1973. He left Iraqi in 1996 and lived a life of homelessness in many Arab, European and African country until he finally stayed in Germany in 2000.

He studied literature and philosophy in Munich University and released his novels in German. Today, Khedr is considered one of the most successful writers in Germany.

Many of his novels were translated into many languages. He also got many awards in literature.
